The Baltimore County Police Department is the nation's 18th largest police department. It has approximately 1,900 sworn personnel and more support personnel. Colonel Alexander Jones, is the highest ranking police officer, second only to the Chief of Police and only the second Black officer to hold the rank of colonel in Baltimore County Police Department's 144 year history. Colonel Jones, began his law enforcement career with the Baltimore County Police Department in 1995 and quickly rose through the ranks to become the department's second ranked officer. For the past 11 years, Colonel Jones has been part of the Executive Leadership team and has been the Colonel of Operations Division and Patrol Division, which is the largest bureau in the agency. Colonel Jones had overseen three quarters of the agency and the majority of the agency's budget. Daily responsibilities included overseeing the Support Operations Division and Patrol Division. During this time under his command, Baltimore County has seen a reduction in crime countywide. In addition to this, Colonel Jones was in charge of the Safe School Division, and the Youth and Community Service Section.
Community residents in Baltimore County have often expressed that there is a need to focus on youth and a greater emphasis on effective community policing. Community Policing is loosely defined as a system of police allocation to particular communities so that they become familiar with the local inhabitants. Charles Sydnor III, MD District 44B State Delegate, fully supports these efforts. Delegate Sydnor has been a stalwart and vocal proponent in how to address the issues that have arisen in how communities are policed since he began serving in the General Assembly. Delegate Sydnor says, "Make no doubt, we need good men and women in law enforcement and the community needs them to adopt practices which place a greater emphasis on effective community policing. This will help build relationships which can help bridge divides that are out here." Colonel Jones has attended many meetings with community and civic associations, religious institutions, business groups as well as forums on Police - Community Relations. He has established many community programs involving the youth of Baltimore County. Colonel Jones believes that engaging the youth is a key component to the success of Baltimore County. He now leads Baltimore County Police's Community Resources Bureau.
Colonel Jones's extensive experience is complimented with superior training and education. He attained his Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, and also attended some of the best and professionally renown training across the country, which has allowed him to talk policy, leadership and the major issues affecting policing in America with the nation's top cops and chief of police.
Colonel Jones is a member of International Association of Chiefs of Police, Major Cities Chiefs Association, Maryland Chiefs of Police, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, Police Executive Research Forum, Leadership Baltimore County Alumni Association, Baltimore Regional Incident Command Team, Big Brother and Big Sister of Center Y Programs board member and also an assistant coach with the Maryland Lady Comets AAU girls basketball team.
Colonel Alexander Jones is a man with the plan to advance the Baltimore County Police Department forward to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.
